Many years ago, in the schools and communities in Anguilla, and across the rest of the Christian world, the Christmas carol There’s A Song In the Air was one of the popular tunes heralding in the joyous season. Today, despite the variations in music and tunes, that beautiful song still has its popular place in the Yuletide. In fact, it is the central theme of all other carols, songs, messages and symbols of Christmas, speaking about the birth of the Christ Child and Redeemer of Mankind, in a manager in ancient Bethlehem. (See text of song elsewhere in The Anguillian).

It was a typical Anguillian day, post card perfect with an unbelievable blue sky, storybook puffs of white cloud and Christmas breeze in the air. Coronation Avenue was all lit up and everyone seemed in the mood that matched the time of year. Well maybe not everyone.

After almost four years, the time has come for me to move on. This, my final column, is difficult to write as there are many emotions involved as well as an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and reflection. Nat Hodge, editor of The Anguillian, and my boss for the past three years, instructed me that I had to write a farewell column.

Dear Sir,
Allow me space to publish this letter of concern about our promotional beaches which are rapidly being destroyed. “Our beaches are and will continue to be the life blood of the Anguillian Economy for the foreseeable future. All our economic engines lie on the cost. Our beach assets stand foremost in our tourism promotions, yet we sit back and allow them to be destroyed.”

When the Editor of The Anguillian approached me ten years ago with the invitation to write a weekly column, he had no idea that his offer and my acceptance were key factors contributing to my mental health. At that time, as an experienced journalist, he would have known the rigours of churning out a piece weekly for your consumption but I was yet to find out.

At this time of the year many individuals will experience alcohol hangover. The related absenteeism and poor job performance associated with alcohol hangover can cost Anguilla thousands of dollars. Although a hangover is associated with alcoholism, most of its cost is incurred by the light-to-moderate drinker. The health risks associated with hangover can be tremendous as well.
