Two weeks ago when I told Miriam Makeba that Byron Lee would be the bandleader when she sang in the choir of ancestors, I did not know she would tell him and I really did not expect her to come back and tell me what he said. He said he was willing to do it but it looked like Anguillians didn’t even know he was up there too.

I was standing in line at the bakery when the idea for this week’s article first took hold. For some reason, my best thinking occurs when I am in the presence of food. Earlier in the day, a colleague was trying to give me directions to her house. After a few attempts to tell me where she lived, she saw the glazed look in my eyes and said, “Give me a pencil, I’ll draw the route.” Bingo, I knew exactly where to go. You see, I am a visual learner. Yes, I can take in and learn information aurally (through my ears), but I retain and understand information much better when it is accompanied by a drawing, picture or model. This is one of my preferred learning styles.

The Education Welfare Officers provide support and guidance to teachers, students and parents in situations where there are problems relating to school attendance and generally addressing students welfare needs. In carrying out our duties we conduct weekly visits to all government schools on the island which include WISE (Workshop Initiative for Support in Education) and the PRU (Pupil Referral Unit). We are therefore informed about issues affecting students in these institutions thus affording us the opportunity to provide assistance.
